Dallas Designer Caitlin Wilson on Her Constant Pursuit of Pretty

It wasn’t going to ruin her life if she was on Instagram, but she’s more reserved and she’ll occasionally say, “Please don’t post this on Instagram.” So I try to be careful with my family. When I was living in a big city and my kids were younger, it made me more nervous to think about exposing them or sharing too much. In Ask an Influencer, Business of Home explores the creator economy. This week, we spoke with Caitlin Wilson, the interiors and textile designer behind the eponymous Instagram account and studio Caitlin Wilson Design. I suppose creativity runs in the family, because we all embrace a good project. From watercolors and Play Doh to school projects and baking supplies, we need a lot of storage for those kitchen essentials that are fun and functional, but definitely not pretty.

Then we moved to Hong Kong and spent six months there, which was really fun and exciting, and that’s where I decided I wanted to design textiles. What unique clauses do you have in your contract?

While I wouldn’t want to live in a house like that, I wouldn’t mind some of the details, which have a very decadent, feminine feel. I’m hoping to bring that in through some of the lights I’ve chosen for our home, especially in the foyer. We’re used to seeing pictures of colorful walls paired with a crisp, white trim. Especially in kids’ rooms, I think it can be really fun to turn that notion on its head by painting the trim a color that ties in with the surrounding wallpaper. It’s a nice complement—the trim enhances the wallpaper, and vice versa.

They were also very supportive and wanted the product that I was producing. I got married pretty young, so I was on a budget and painting chevrons on walls and doing lots of apartment-friendly types of things. I could get them to the people in Hong Kong, but there actually wasn’t a reliable mail system in Dubai in 2010.

I have also partnered with a lot of bigger name brands this year as I embarked on my house renovation, so they were really fun to work with. It’s been fun to dip my feet back into more of the influencer role from a design point of view. I don’t share too much; I don’t really get on camera and talk face to face all the time.

I continue to design but I also really liked the finishing touches. “There used to be a line about Los Angeles that everyone was either a screenwriter or an actor,” says Scotti Sitz, owner of L.A. “I think in some respects, you could start to make the case that everyone here is now an interior designer.” Indeed, the city’s design scene has boomed, with new shops and showrooms sprouting up every month. What’s most exciting about this design renaissance, though, is the range of visions and styles represented around the city—due in part, perhaps, to the constant flow of new residents from around the country and world. Design scene is equally embracing of the primitive and the cutting-edge, the refined with the unrefined,” says Adam Blackman of Blackman Cruz, on Highland Avenue. I’ve always wanted to maintain a certain level of professionalism. I like being more of a design influencer and less of a typical influencer, mostly because it’s not what I solely rely on for income. For now, let’s spend some time in the main kitchen exploring how we hope to live in this space—and how a beautiful and functional design can alleviate some common kitchen challenges. Sourced from the Paris-based La Cornue, a brand known for its attention to detail and craftsmanship, our luxury range is at once elegant and classic.

Who knows if we’re going to create every wallpaper under the sun, and then our wallpaper sales are going to be down. We’re keeping things lean and not investing too much in one thing and being creative. That’s the benefit to being in this design world—what comes with being a designer is creativity.

Now it’s the focal point regardless of where you are in the room. Not only does a double island offer plenty of seating, it accommodates low, pull-out drawers that are easily accessible for children. But I’m getting ahead of myself, maybe because the answer to my first question, the one about how we hope to live in our space, is a bit more complicated. When everything in a home arrives new from one manufacturer, the result looks like a catalog. If you incorporate antiques that you love, you bring balance to a space that lets even your new pieces shine. For example, in addition to using it in our closet and in the hidden kitchen, we’re having some natural oak furniture made to double as built-ins in some of the rooms.

A swinging door connects it to the dining room and an open door connects it to the main kitchen, so our hidden kitchen gets a lot of visibility. My dad has always loved and collected antiques, so living in what I call a “collected home” feels comforting and familiar. I love the calming effects of blue, a color that is quintessentially “me.” While this home still features plenty of blue, I’ve also been drawn to shades of green. Recently we visited the Palace of Versailles, which incorporates shades of greens that add sophistication and warmth.
